- A start relay is an electrical switch use in conjunction with a start capacitor to assist in the starting process of certain types of electric motors, particularly in refrigeration systems and air compressors. Its primary function is to control the flow of electrical current to the start winding of a motor during the startup phase and then disconnect it once the motor reaches a predetermined speed. The primary purpose of a start relay is to temporarily connect the start capacitor in series with the motor’s start winding during the startup phase. Start relays are typically compact devices with a coil, contacts, and a coil spring. The coil is energized during the startup phase, causing the contacts to close. Once the motor reaches a certain speed, the coil spring or other mechanism disengages the contacts, disconnecting the start capacitor from the circuit.
